Manchester United suffered an embarrassing defeat at home to Brighton to make it three defeats in the Premier League from just five games. So what were the talking points from the game? Read on to find out...
Erik Ten Hag's choice of formation was bad
Erik Ten Hag decided to go for an attacking 4-3-1-2 formation against a very dangerous Brighton side and he was duly punished. The formation has plenty of advantages in attack but is very vulnerable when it comes to defending. So it wasn't a surprise that all three of Brighton's goal emanated from Manchester United failing to defend properly when Brighton attacked.
Erik Ten Hag knows Manchester United struggle against Brighton in recent years so this match shouldn't have been the match to experiment formation with. To be frank, the defeat is mostly due to Erik Ten Hag's ineptitude today.
Manchester United players can't run to save their life
I wouldn't know the need to go to a hot region for pre-season to get the players fit only for the season to start and the players are all looking unfit. Brighton were just simply passing through Manchester United's blocks of defense like a knife through butter. Erik Ten Hag's men displayed lack of match fitness as they simply couldn't chase for the ball when Brighton had possession which costed them the match.
Brighton simply can't stop embarrassing Manchester United
It was in 2022 that Brighton embarrassed Manchester United 4-0 in the Premier League and since then they have gone on to win three of the next four meetings in the league with Manchester United. I know Brighton are becoming a force in the league but it's not as if they are invincible. This same Brighton have lost 3-1 at home to West Ham this season, yet they played Manchester United as though they were the reigning league champions. They will be looking to do the double over Manchester United as they did last season.
Erik Ten Hag's substitutions didn't help matters
I know as at the time Manchester United made their first substitution, they were already two goals down but a right substitution would have earned Manchester United a draw at least in the game but Erik Ten Hag got it all wrong and his substitutions back fired. I know one of his substitute scored in Hannibal but to be sincere, with Manchester United chasing a game a player like Hannibal shouldn't be the one the manager should be looking forward to for ransom. It was a bad day at the office for Erik Ten Hag and I hope this wouldn't repeat itself otherwise it won't be long before many of the fans who are supporting him begin to turn their backs against him.
