The Super Eagles brightened their chances of making it to the FIFA World Cup in 2026 with a laboured victory against their Rwandan counterparts in Uyo. So what are the talking points from the victory? Read on to find out.
No Osimhen, no problem
Osimhen was taken out in the first half after an injury and was replaced by new Wolves man in Tolu Arokodare. The Wolves striker delivered the three points with a spirited effort after a goal-mouth scramble. Tolu went on to win the Man of the Match award for what was a very impressive showing in green and white for Nigeria. This scintillating performance from Tolu has shown that the Super Eagles can do without Victor Osimhen. Something that was lacking in recent past.
Rwandan goalkeeper was top notch
The Super Eagles should have scored more than once if not for the brilliance of Fiacre Ntwari in goal for Rwanda. The shot stopper pulled some incredible stops to keep the score line modest at 1-0.
Benjamin Fredrick was superb at defense
The 20-year-old center back was excellent at the heart of defense for the Super Eagles. He rarely put any foot wrong throughout the game. The future really is bright for the Moses Simon Academy graduate.
Eric Chelle's tactics was spot on
The Malian tactian was superb with his tactics on the evening with his substitutions and formation tweak proving excellent. The idea to go two man up top when Nigeria needed a breakthrough worked well and also the idea to seal victory by going three man at the back towards the tail end of the game is tactically spot on. Anything other than the three points would have spelled doom for the former Mali coach who performed woefully with the CHAN Eagles just recently.
