Godwin Odiko: Why Maresca's success at Chelsea leaves no excuse for Amorim next season

Enzo Maresca's incredible success in his first full season at Chelsea has conspicuously left Manchester United's Ruben Amorim with no excuses when the new season kicks off in August.

Manchester United fans were left jealous and envious of Chelsea's season after the London Giants claimed the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup to make it two trophies in Maresca's first full season in charge. But it wasn't the case when Maresca took charge at the beginning of the 2024/2025 season. For context, Manchester United has just won the FA Cup and automatically qualified for the Europa League further demoting Chelsea to the Conference League. But at the end of the season, it's Chelsea who were smiling after winning the UEFA Conference League and also making top four in the league before crowing it up with the FIFA Club World Cup.

Ruben Amorim has often times stated the fact that he knows he lacks time on the job and that saying is becoming more real than it was after this Maresca's success with Chelsea. The Blues boss inherited a mess from Mauricio Pochettino and went on to make a world champion out of them. Many have stated that Amorim needs his own signings to succeed at Manchester United which is correct but virtually all of Maresca's signings in his first full season weren't big name signings - with many of them not even making the first eleven. So, it wasn't really his signings that has worked wonders for him this season but the signings he met at the club.

This is not making an excuse for the Manchester United board to starve Amorim of quality signings. But it's just a wake up call to Amorim to learn to utilize what he has at the moment to achieve success otherwise he will be shown the way out come Christmas.

Amorim has already gotten Cunha from Wolves and he is gunning to sign Mbuemo from Brentford. If he can get Mbuemo over the line and a quality striker to complement, then I can say it's a good window for him. But regardless of how the window ends for him, if Manchester United doesn't start the season well and are out of the top six by Christmas, I expect the board to fire Amorim. This success from Maresca in his first season is a wake up call for Amorim to do well in his own first full season in charge after underperforming in the six months he handled the team after taking over from Erik Ten Hag.

  1. Unfortunately, articles such as yours ignore the contextual differences in the 2 teams. You concluded that it wasn't his signings but do you know how many signings Ted Boehly made for Chelsea since he took over? Pochettino did not leave a mess but underachieved with the squad he had, their potential is just coming through now. Chelsea does not have the same financial problems ManUtd has neither do they have the same lack of quality player as ManUtd. Your conclusions are simply your own which is not borne out of any facts but an assumption that you know what will happen.
ManUtd may be a banter club now but will remain a relevant headache to all winning or losing.
